The festival is geared towards people from Húsavík that have moved away and want to visit family and friends but also towards tourists. The festival was held for the first time in 1997 and this year the festival has a Swedish tone to it. The town of Húsavík has been working closely with the Swedish embassy towards an exhibition on Garðar Svavarsson, the Swedish viking who came to Iceland in 870 and was the first to dwell in Iceland over winter. The master chef from the Embassy will cook and there will be a Swedish menu in the town's restaurants. Many events will take place during the week, such as a sailing course for children and teenagers, golf tournament, car show, theatre play, concerts, amusement park and a Swedish circus will teach circus tricks. The festival is free of charge but some events charge admission.
