Forsetinn greindi fréttamönnum frá þessum áformum í Flórída í dag. Trump greindi einnig frá þessu í færslum á Twitter síðu sinni. Forsetinn sagði í færslum sínum að Mexíkó græddi yfir 100 milljarða dala á kostnað Bandaríkjanna á ári hverju. Ef Mexíkó stöðvaði ekki innflytjendur til Bandaríkjanna myndi hann loka landamærunum. Forsetinn sagði það auðvelt fyrir Mexíkó sem taki frekar pening frá Bandaríkjunum og „tali.“
